Teaching of English is compulsory in most of the
medical disciplines at Ziauddin University and
the Department of English caters to such needs.
Keeping in view the varying needs of English for
various disciplines the department has designed
English Language & Communication Skills
syllabus, based on ES P (English for Specific
Purposes).
This needs based syllabus will help the students
in reading and writing assignments related to
medical topics. It will also help them in meeting
other workplace related writing needs. The course
lays greater emphasis at developing oral
communication, particularly, presentation skills.
This course employs methods of Communicative
Language Teaching (CLT) where the emphasis is
on learners need to use English in order to
communicate successfully in their professional
fields. The students will be provided equal
opportunities to practice tasks which relate to
their field of specialization. The methodology
focuses on fluency as well as accuracy of language
in their communication. In both oral and written
communication the content relates to medical
context so that the students feel at home with
the background and acquire fluency and accuracy
of grammatical elements with ease.
Evaluation
Evaluation of students is based on a combination
of continuous assessments and a final examination.
In most programmes the weighting given to each
is 50%. Continuous assessments consist of two
eight-week Tests, Mid-Term Test, and two more
eight-week Tests and towards the end one Final
Examination. These assessments include
assignments, presentations and written tests.
The purpose of the continuous assessment is to
keep the students focused on the contents of the
subject taught. The final result reflects round the
year academic performance of the students.
Evaluation of the teaching staff is also carried
out. Towards the end of the programme students
are asked to complete a questionnaire to assess
the performance of the subject instructor.
